Transcript:
Student: How come our hardest homework is always due on Tuesdays? Mr. Burke: You do your best work on Monday nights. Am I right? Student: Mr. Burke is a genius, but I can't figure him out. Frazz: Monday night is when your dad bogarts the TV to watch football.

Here on the east coast by the time the football comes on that kid would be in bed

Jef is like one or two other web cartoonists, in making me run for the (urban) dictionary. Thanks to Alexikakos for saving me the trouble this time.

The phrase “to bogart” is hardly new. I first heard it used in the movie Easy Rider. Specifically the song “Don’t bogart that joint my friend” by The Fraternity of Man.

Not in my home. My kids were (are) football fanatics. Especially, where the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned.

The word “bogart” is even in the Oxford English Dictionary. They say “to force, coerce, bully; to intimidate” and “to appropriate greedily or selfishly; to take or use most of, to steal.”

So does it hurt or hinder to not have Dad help with the homework?
Michelle Morris about 12 years ago
Me,too. I still use it.

@stomps You are right of course. Turns out what I wrote is the first line of the song rather than its title.

@Alexikakos Sorry, no idea. My knowledge of (country) music is rather limited; perhaps someone else here knows.

as talked about in the definition posted, it comes from Bogart’s holding of a cigarette and not using it. In this situation the dad is actively using the tv to watch football so it isn’t a correct usage of the verb. Unless that dad were to fall asleep while watching the game, which is possible.

It means to hog something or not share or pass it on after your turn, and was mostly used to marijuan since you were suppsed to take a hit and pass it to the next person. It never meant to “hold and not smoke.”
