Frazz by Jef Mallett for July 01, 2013
Transcript:
Miss Plainwell: Well, Here you are. Mrs. Olsen: Swell. How big a town do you have to live in before a bitter old teacher can push a kid out og the way of a car without ending up in the local paper? Miss Plainwell: This is the Chicago Tribune. Mrs. Olsen: Swell.

Pay for one, take twelve copies, and pass them to all of your friends. (DISCLAIMER!: I was a newspaper delivery girl: all of my route people got one copy of the paper unless my distributor knew someone on my route did something extraordinary, then there would be four extra copies rubber-banded with that person’s name and address. And I obliged.)

Hey! Jef Mallet’s a Michigan guy. What’s wrong with the Detroit Free Press or (if you have to) the Detroit News?

@Rugeirn.
I think that the point is that her story is bigger than the Detroit area.

I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience, and about Pacopuddy’s below — my experience was very different. I loved the program I was in, I had great teachers, some of the best scholars in the world, they helped me publish, and no university I’ve ever worked for wanted to own any of my work.

I am sorry you had a bad experience, especially in graduate school. I did not have the most wonderful time either, but in the end it was worth it for me. I love teaching and research and do a damn good job of it. Many (most) professors work really hard to do a good job and to motivate students and guide them.

Don’t say “swell” when part of you is swollen.

I read this in the Chicago Tribune this morning, and wanted to check here to see if they had localized it (so the LA Times would say “LA Times”, etc.). @Rugeirn Drienborough: There’s nothing wrong with the Detroit Free Press, but the whole point is to show that the story is bigger than just the state. (It’s also possible that the Trib is the highest circulation paper that carries Frazz, and he’s taking the opportunity to butter up the big guys)

I love the strips that show Ms. Olson’s soft spot. I like to think she started out in education as sweet and naive and caring. She grew bitter and cynical, but she still cares deeply for her students. I worked as an educational aide for a couple of years. I think if I actually got my teaching degree and worked in education as long as she has, I would be like that too, if not grouchier.
Right now I’m an RN doing wound care at a long term care facility during the weekends and filling in for people during the week. Which leads to a whole other level of burnout. But it’s still awesome.
