Frazz by Jef Mallett for August 13, 2016
Transcript:
Coach Hacker: So if you wear a mostly empty water-bottle belt, does it look like you're finishing up an epic long run? Caulfield: Kind of like Mrs. Olsen's giant tote bag of "grading" when all anybody ever sees her do is crosswords? Miss Plainwell: Exactly like it, in terms of fooling anybody.

I know several people who are OK with a grown man hanging out with kids he is not related to. There is actually a program called Big Brother that does this and has many volunteers on both sides. I myself have hung out with many boys that I am not related to. I have gone to the parks with the, I have played basketball and baseball with them, I have gone fishing with them, I have played Pokemon with them, etc. All of their moms (all single) have thanked me for it and a couple made it clear when I was single that they wished I would date them. I got some comments from strangers when the kids looked nothing like me but few criticized (all men) and many (all women) told me how much they appreciated guys who would spend time to help these kids get a positive male role model. And of course, the single moms whose kids I took out appreciated the time to themselves. So maybe if you quit judging people’s motives, you might realize that this could be a very beneficial relationship for children.

Man, how many knots can you tie yourself into? Jeeze, just assume it’s a small town where everyone knows everyone else. You’ll feel better.
Al Nala over 8 years ago
The entire town is within a quarter-mile radius of the school.

I didn’t notice this until I read your comment, even the dog is pointing.

“. I’m not trying to turn this into something dirty…” Sure looks that way to me.

A word of advice to Coach, either lose the bottles or commit to a fitness regimen, pick who you are or want to be, then pursue that goal. Trying to please everyone rarely works, and trying to fool everyone, even less so.

I think you’re a little over-suspicious. As others have said — it’s a small town. All the teachers and other school employees run into and meet each other after hours — as well as the kids. Frazz is not enticing the kids to be with him with ice cream or treats. There’s nothing funky hinted at or going on.

Why do people who don’t like this comic strip keep reading it?

I think it is good that Frazz in a mentor to the younger kids. And I did notice that there is a great deal of energy in today’s strip. the bending, pointing and pulling all suggest that in the next moment every one will have moved on

RR said you were saying nothing. I disagree. Your comments remind me of the “Decency Committees” that popped up across the nation in the 50s & 60s. They were purportedly formed to ‘examine’ materials – printed, painted, movies, sculpture &c to determine whether or not they were “MORAL” enough to be in their town. Very often, they were comprised of men who ‘checked’ ‘dirty’ movies, comics and so on, which were then duly “Confiscated”. Between your comments yesterday and today, it sounds an awful lot like the justifications they made for the existence of their committees.

Night-Gaunt49Sure he could survive. His main income is from song writing. He is doing janitorial work because he worked his way through school that way, it is a kind of job that lets one put their mind in neutral and wait for the muse to help, it permits interaction with others when writing is an essentially solitary job, it provides benefits in health insurance and retirement that self-employed song writing doesn’t, etc..1MadHatThey lasted longer than that. I design role-playing games, and I can testify they were quite active during the “satanic panic” days of the 1980s-’90s. One of the more famous of these, who moved to another state every time his medical license was revoked, finally got convicted on drugs for sex charges.

My brother in law is a janitor at a Jr. high school, students there in age from 12 to 14. H is also a bird watcher, and has an expensive camera with telephoto lens. He jokes with the students, takes pictures, and submits some of them for the annual yearbook. Is there anything wrong with a janitor taking candid shots of students, and putting some of them in the yearbook? Some would say yes, others would say no. Whatever they say though it doesn’t alter the reality of the situation.Knowing my brother in law, I can definitely say in this case, nothing wrong going on.
