So that wasn’t the final score?Or it was the final score and no one was able to kick, carry, or pass the ball successfully into the end zone for most of the game?

Soccer that’s bad. Football, that’s unfortunate, but if it was with 57 minutes and 30 seconds left, that would be bad.

So he had that time and never scored? That is bad.

So they were behind by 6 really early, implying they lost by a ton. Or maybe they ended up losing 6-0. Or maybe they ended up losing by 1. Who knows?

Who on Earth thinks “the score” of a completed game refers to whatever it happened to be 20% of the way thru the game?

This is rather confusing to me today. With a 6-0 score with about 48 minutes left… is the joke part that it only got worse from that point? Or is the joke that the team forfeited or some such thing? In either case, I am presuming (because it is a Friday game) that it is a game in the school district. Wins and losses are all a part of the kids learning, so it seems odd that Coach Hacker is so grumpy three days later.A Friday game suggests that Coach Hacker may be the High School Football Coach (most varsity HS football games are on Fridays in my area). Unless the district is rather small, it seems Coach would (if the HS Football Coach) be usually at the High School building, not the Elementary School. Perhaps the district is very small and he is the Physical Education teacher and coach for ALL grades? To me, today’s effort seems to raise more questions than it does in terms of eliciting a laugh or grin.

I think maybe Mallett thinks a football game is 48 minutes long (like pro basketball) and the opponents had scored 30 seconds in, with the assumption that it got worse from there. But there are a lot of games where the first team that scores ends up losing, so this makes little sense.

I remember once when I was in high school our student body got worked up about a football game. We were winless (not unusual) and were playing another winless team. But victory was not to be. We lost 73-0.

Not a very good one, shows a complete lack of understanding the game, but it’s well known that Frazz has no respect for team sports.

It gets a bit tedious reading how the minor characters are constantly bad tempered or ill mannered over every little thing, yet the primary ones like Frazz and Caulfield (and their running buddies) are constantly “in the right.”

Yeah, I think the implication is that one team scoring in 30 seconds (high school games usually have 12 minute quarters) suggests a blow-out. But a team scoring on the opening kick-off (in a far shorter time) and actually windin up on the losing end happens quite often. On top of that. replying to “what was the score?” with the score after thirty seconds is a very contrived setup. Kind of a misfire of a joke, IMO.

I was on the staff of a youth football team some years ago. We made a total of ONE touchdown over the entire nine game season. And that came in the middle of the third quarter of game nine.But the kids had fun.

What we know is two things, his team lost and they were down a score early. What happened between then and the end of the game could be one of many things. No change in score which would be frustrating because all you needed to do to win would be to score one touchdown and an extra point. Or it could have been a blowout which would be embarrassing. But it could as easily been a game with his team losing by any number of scores. Not the best joke. My guess is that it was a blowout.

I think he meant 57 minutes 30 seconds. Or Maybe 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

6 – 0 means it was a close game through most of the first quarter.

The first panel shows the final outcome – his team lost, yet people go out of their way to show that some games can turn around an initial unfavorable score, which is clearly not the case here.
