Frazz by Jef Mallett for January 04, 2017

Miss Plainwell: I got excited when Mr. Spaetzle asked for a ride to the gym. But he just wanted to get dropped off at the garage on the way to the gym. Now I'm worried he thinks I was judging him. Frazz: Maybe he's judging you for driving someplace to exercise. Miss Plainwell: Trust me, I beat him to that worry, too.

Drop him off at the gym and he can run or walk to the garage.

Yeah, he “thinks” you’re judging him. Right.

Yes it could be construed that way as we know so well.

The other characters would be better served assuming these two smug and superior characters are ALWAYS judging them…

Too much thinking.

Miss Plainwell is closer to the mark, and I am not convinced all her worrying is about judgement. In the US we pay people to mow our lawns, shovel our driveways, do our housework. And then drive to the gym and pay someone there to get our exercise.

Don’t worry. He knows he’s fat. Another doughnut will soothe his nerves.

Some people need to exercise only indoors, at least most of the year. Our cardiologist has told us to not exercise outdoors in weather less than 50 degrees, or when it is too hot.

They say that every 60 minutes you exercise can extend your lifespan by up to an hour. To me, that means I’m swapping an hour when I’m young, healthy, vigorous, flexible, ambitious, and interested in life for one when I’m old, feeble, creaky, hurting, and don’t give a crap.

Several years ago I was at roughly 300 pounds and have now lost ~120 pounds. Exercise is a good thing and it helped me feel better and I now enjoy it, but no one goaded me into exercising. I simply wanted to try and I found a way that was successful for me.

Principal Spaetzel is a grand fellow, whether he exercises or not. It is a personal decision. So, I like his character as he is or if he changes. It is the person and his/her personality that matters not their size or shape.

As far as DRIVING to the gym to exercise…. I think there are many reasons why driving to the gym can be good and acceptable. For me, while I much prefer exercising outside, running outside in my neck of the woods is dicey this time of year. Sometimes the paths are clear enough for safety and I can, but other times there is considerable ice and I feel I would be foolish trying to run (with my rather clumsy nature) on paths that are icy. So, on those days, I too will drive to a gym where I can run indoors.

I used to live near a high-end “fitness center”. Not only did people drive there, the place had valet parking so the patrons wouldn’t have to walk more than a few feet to the front door, rather than half a block from the back of the parking lot.

I used to judge people for driving to the gym.
Then I almost got run over on the sidewalk by some entitled yuppie mom and her young son – on three separate occasions. She insisted on riding on the curvy, narrow sidewalk with him instead of the flatter, ten foot wide bicycle path because “He’s a chiiiiulllllld!” The last even lead to me being forced off the sidewalk into some tree roots and a sprained ankle.
I now drive to the nearest walking trail.

That precludes outdoor exercise in my part of Texas. Like why to people have convertibles here; if it isn’t too hot or too cold, it is raining or threatening rain.

Left out the part about riding the elevator to the second floor, where the stair-climbing machines are.
I also like the way we haul our bicycles to the bike trail (which, of course, does not go anywhere near where people actually live) on the back of our SUVs…

Aaaah! No BigPuma and lots of NightGaunt49. That’s a good day for me and, I suspect, more than a few of you as well maybe?
