This reminds of a commercial where an internet/TV service provider was selling its service by saying you can watch TV at the park or at the beach, with big screens showing beautiful pictures of the park and the beach. Why in the world would anyone want to watch TV at the park or at the beach?!
You know, I took many a book with me on trips as a kid, and I’d have LOVED to have had an e-reader so I could take all my books and have a backlight to read when it got dark. Yeah, there are windows, but how interesting is a traffic jam, really? Or mile after mile of cow pasture? Come on folks. You know you were bored on trips as a kid too.
To ‘wile away one’s time’ is simply to use one’s mental powers to survive what might be long tedious hours by immersing oneself in interesting thoughts, daydreams, mental game play. For a young student, that time could be as short as a minute or as long as a class period. For the teacher that could be the length of the exam period they must monitor.

I have a 4G LTE data plan for my phone. I don’t even bother with wifi hotspots anymore since they’re often slower, and 4G is almost everywhere now.

Why would you need Wi-Fi to read?

That’s kind of why there are WINDOWS in cars, so you can actually LOOK OUT, and see things! Today’s kids should try that once in a while.

When I was a kid, Mom and Dad bought comic books and we’d read those in an attempt to while away the trip.

A tech-savvy kid would know to download the books to her phone ahead of time so no live connection is needed to read them

On long trips I read aloud to the family, usually stuff like Terry Pratchett, Dave Barry, Roy Blount Jr., Douglas Adams, Mary Roach
