He rarely last a full class period, given his particular sense of the absurd. Why would anyone think he might last an hour in any of the stultifyingly dull low wage jobs that are out there. He would need a job where his innate intelligence and sense of logic would be most usefully applied, perhaps in some area of research that requires leaps of intuition and vision. Even there, the system would have to be very tolerant.
Agree with Sanderling75. I’ve worked with this type of employee and they are always on a knife edge. They are brilliant, but often lack in other skills required in the workplace. One individual comes to mind, I could ask this person to defend any technical point in his field of expertise and no one in the world could challenge him. That I could count on, but his patience for every day tedium was nonexistent. We all had to cover for him. Big drag…
I have a feeling that the K’s are one reason why we have people in the USA who vote Communistically, they hope they get enough power to purge the parasites. I just ignore them as much as I can and hope they fade out of existence, the same way all fads do!
Intelligence without focus is unproductive. If Caulfield learns how to focus instead of simply looking for ways to disrupt, he’ll be all right. If not…then he’ll just be the annoying person in the next cubicle.
Actually, upon further review here, Caulfield might still be the hero of this one. True, Mrs. Olsen did well, winning the argument on an undeniably complimentary tone. The person who can do that is rare. But still more rare is the arguer who is handed his medicine with some honey, so to speak, and still takes the medicine.
In corporate America there are three main possibilities. 1) at the top end, you get a fixed salary. 2) in between, you get a fixed salary per time worked. 3) at the bottom, you get paid by unit production. (This is neither complete nor always accurate.)

I see him in the writers’ room of a late-night talk show. Do those guys get paid by the hour?

I’m pretty sure everyone will be paid hourly during at least some point in their career.
