Somebody should get Maya Lin on the phone – within a few years, the nation will want to memorialize the deceased from this viral tragedy. Given, of course, that it’s reached an end by then.
Miss Plainwell has it right. We are the only species that honors our dead and prays for our injured in times such as these. And today, we recommit to that task. It is one of the best parts of us.
Disease, on the other hand, levels the playing field. It honors neither beliefs nor walls nor social position. It can be reduced in effect, but never admit defeat. It simply waits until all the necessary elements are aligned, then makes its presence known. It experiences neither joy nor regret. It just is.
This is 11th comic I have read this morning and the first that mentions Memorial Day. I had forgotten, but as a Canuck, it is just another day in Paradise.
I am sure the Sunshine Patriots and Summer Soldier reactionaries will show their respect by getting stool hugging, knee walking DRUNK. The ameriKan way
I find it hard to “like” this, although I did. 345k dead as of a few minutes ago, and counting upward by the minute. sandpiper says it well. We go out of our way as a species to kill one another in war; disease respects no country, no border, no idealogy.
Frazz15 hrs · Memorial Day has always seemed a very noble but slightly incongruous holiday. It’s a delicate mix of somber mourning and gratitude that ends up getting expressed with so much celebration of the freedoms people died for that we appear to have forgotten the mourning part. It’s like a really raucous wake sometimes. Which honestly seems like one acceptable approach. I don’t get the impression there will be many parades this year, thanks to an enemy that doesn’t respond especially well to traditional military strength. And maybe we have more to keep track of, but I don’t think we’ll remember any less.

And lest we forget the families and friends of those who sacrified everything. To them, every day is Memorial Day.

I think remembering each day is part of “Live one day at a time” isn’t it?

We are fighting a war on the Coronavirus and the medical pros are the soldiers, so perhaps those that lost their lives should also be considered.
