But they’re not all three-point shots, in fact less than 40% are. Besides, basketball is pretty boring – it’s just back and forth with no one getting ahead unless someone makes a mistake. Pretty strange that the game has to rely on mistakes.
What’s boring to me is the continuous streams of inane commentary and the flickering camera shots. Seems they just can’t keep quiet or still. Same for lots of tv programming. Cameras seem to jitter and jink so much it is hard to concentrate. Although that might be to distract from the poor script, acting, and badly set up action in most shows.
Obviously he did not estimate the 400 in the calculation. The calculation was based on the 397 points. If he had estimated the 400 points, a 4-digit answer would just be wrong. The precision of your answers cannot be greater than the precision of the numbers you start with…so if he estimated the total points at about 400, that would be one basket in about 20 sec. I had problems with students who would put 3 1-digit numbers in their calculators and get an answer to 3 decimals.
Precision and accuracy are two different aspects of any mathematical observation. “The first manned Moon landing was in 1969” is accurate but not particularly precise. (It didn’t mention July 20). “The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is 4.141592653589793” is pretty precise but inaccurate. (It’s actually 3.14159….)
