I know how Mrs. Dear feels. My traditions are to never serve the same holiday meal two years in a row. Sure, I fix turkey, but never the same sides two years and Christmas is always, always different. This year, is osso bucco. When I was a kid, I can remember my mother bringing the same Thanksgiving meal to the table one year. It hit me. It was always the same. Not one change. Nothing new. The meal was good, but relentlessly the same. It must have been then that I decided I would always do different things.

I have never in my entire life had a Christmas turkey. In my family turkey was strictly for Thanksgiving. When I was a kid my family would have a buffet spread at an aunt’s or uncle’s house. As an adult with my own family we usually just have whatever we want on Christmas day…usually some thing casual. My sister hosts a Holiday gathering at her house, but it’s usually on another date; this year it’s 1/8/22.

I’d rather have a traditional Christmas ham!

Well, King Henry VIII rather liked the swans as Christmas dinner. That was long before we discovered the turkeys when we went to the New World in the late 16th early 17th centuries.

Mom usually made turkey for Thanksgiving and for Christmas – I think mostly because it provided a lot of meat for a large family … and yes, the sides never changed. I think, if she had tried to change things up a bit, there would have been great disappointment as she only made most of those sides for holiday meals … we looked forward to them the whole year until they came around again. I miss her dearly and still make at least some of those dishes in her memory, even though my spousal unit doesn’t care for them … he gets his favorites and I get mine, so we’re both contented. This year, we do plan to have a non-traditional meal for Christmas, but Thanksgiving was traditional all the way.

Every year my wife asks what I want for Thanksgiving, and I say steak & lobster. She always fixes turkey.
