Back in the Cold War days, I explained the difference between the USA and the Soviet Union by how they celebrated a workers’ holiday. In the USSR, you got up early on a cold and rainy day at the start of May, stood outside in the cold for a couple hours and the marched down the main street under the watchful eyes of the party bosses (who were also your regular bosses). In the USA, you got a day off in late summer, which you were expected to spend grilling, picnicking, going to the ball game, drinking a few beers. That, to me, explains everything.
