Maybe not, but it’s not doing your clothes any good.

Once asked, “Why do you go to school so much? Are dumb or something?”

You can see my success just by looking at me now.

This reminds me of being in Grammer school. This classmate used to ask me why I did my lessons. She said it was pointless. I wonder if she’s still alive. She was named after Loretta Lynn.

Once taught in rural community with narrow views on education vs working. One senior-citizen supervisor, nicknamed Bluster, announced in a public meeting. I quit school in the 8th grade. And it didn’t hurt me any. [He regularly voted against any improvements in schools and county property. He also blew a lot of money in easy money schemes.] A former classmate asked. So, what did you do with the rest of the money your folks left you? Applause and laughter were loud and long. To say his face turned red is like saying the sun is a light. You can’t escape your childhood.

True story: I examined an 8-year-old who seriously needed reading glasses. His mom was thrilled to find that her son’s struggles at school could be remediated by something this simple.

But parents were divorced, and the son was on dad’s insurance. So dad shows up, and his first question tells me all I need to know: “What happens if he doesn’t wear them?”

“His struggles in school will increase, he will probably be held back, and he will work much harder than he has to if he wants to succeed.”

Dad asked mom how he was doing in school. “He’s reading two grades below level.”

Dad “thinks” for a minute and says, “I got a seventh-grade education. Ain’t hurt me none.” Walked out.

I so wanted to hurt him. I wonder about that kid often.

You could say that dropping out of school is literally why he is where he is today.
