The husband smiles because he imagines plans for appropriate epitaphs upon his mother-in-law’s gravestone … else a barbecue party at her cremation.

His smile is because the mother in-law was on the phone, not at the door.

I guess I got lucky. My mother-in-law was a wonderful gal.
