A colleague of mine had a somewhat similar experience. On weekends he would drive 2 1/2 hours each way to visit his girlfriend. This was in Germany and he would drive on the Autobahn. One time he was riding his motorcycle on that route. He was tired from a long week of work and fell asleep while driving. The motorcycle went off the Autobahn. He ended up going right between two sign posts. Luckily nothing happened other than a big scare.
A few weeks later he was driving his car on that route. He felt he was getting tired and didn’t want to risk falling asleep at the wheel again. So, he stopped at a rest stop, parked his car and took a nap.
While he was sleeping other vehicles came and went, including a large truck that parked in front of him, at a 90 degree angle to him.
When he woke up the first thing he saw was the side of this big truck right in front of him. Thinking he was still on the Autobahn he freaked out and slammed on the brakes as hard as he could (probably screaming all the way), gripping the steering wheel with all his might.
It took him a moment to remember that he had parked and was not actually driving on the Autobahn. He finally was able to calm down, but it was one heck of a fright.
See?! I told you it was an original steering wheel from a 1953 Austin Healey 100-4! When he snaps out of it, I’m going to ask if he wants to sell it.

“Nearly” driving off a cliff doesn’t put you in the hospital.

At least the tips of his fingers are no longer embedded in the steering wheel.

The steering wheel DID come off in my hand once. Frightening

If it came off in his hands I can see why he’s scared stiff.

It’s not as much fun as it sounds like it would be.
