I remember when my son was about 2 or 3, I was shopping with him when he suddenly walked up to an older woman, affectionately grabbed onto her coat and called her “grandma”. She was black. We are white. She had a similar coat as my mother and although her skin was dark, had white hair styled similarly to how my mother styled hers. To this toddler, any older woman with a gray winter coat and white hair must be “grandma”. The woman and I laughed. It really showed how children are colorblind. This was over 30 years ago; I still remember it.
