Lio by Mark Tatulli for July 17, 2011
Transcript:
Lio by Mark Tatulli Lio HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? The Anachronistic Cavemen HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? Caveman #1: Maybe we should pray for him. Caveman #2: Whoa! Let's not open that can of worms again, eh? Nothing New HAVE YOU SEEN MY SQUID? Boy: A missing squid...wow! That doesn't lead me to any gags about text messaging or trendy economic humor. Father: Consequently, I am unable to make any adultish "aren't kids stupid" quips. I guess we can just stand here and look well drawn. Cul De Sac PUZZLE PUZZLE Girl: Glad you could come and play today, Mr. Octopus...are you ready for the volcano sacrifice?

Thanks, Fear. What a pair Lio and Alice would make!

My WAG is that some artist or lawyer associated with one of the strips raised a stink (my guess would be B.C.’s). Parody is fair use…

^ And yet GoComics will still sell you a Framed Collectible Print of it!.I sure hope Petey doesn’t come outside and see that. The poor boy has enough phobias already!!!

One of the strips parodied is a King Feature. I suspect rival syndicate lawyers. Thanx, f-c.

This isn’t the only strip to visit <Cul de Sac today. Rhymes With Orange did a crossover, too.

Today’s is a good one, and it’s well worth following one of the links above to read. The parody of B.C. was well done, but I don’t recognize what’s being parodied by “Nothing New”. Can anyone fill me in?
Amalagam Premium Member over 13 years ago
I think the third strip is “Dustin”, but it’s hard to tell.
Kheldarn over 13 years ago
Interestingly, it showed up twice in my e-mail. The first time, it was in a vertical format, but squished, and then right below that, it was in the 4 panel layout linked above.I also got two copies of The Argyle Sweater, and unlike the two layouts for Lio, both were exactly the same.Very weird.

Funny thing, that “Cul De Sac’s” title isn’t changed but the other two are, don’cha think?

I got the Lio at GoComics in my e-mail today. I guess some people just can’t take a well-observed joke.

This is not the first time Lio has attacked BC and other comics. You’d think a one gag comic would learn not to throw stones.
bama1fan92 over 13 years ago
Though I can understand a comic that loves vampires, zombies, ghosts, monsters, etc. might be uncomfortable with a strip a Christian view.

Looks like somebody’s mad at somebody.
jumbobrain over 13 years ago
I’d guess it’s not the “fair use” issue, it’s the “we don’t want the Christian right coming down on us” issue. Which is a shame.

It turned up in my Inbox. . You gotta find it – its egregious, dire and very. Plays w/ Cul de Sac and makes wicked fun of Blondie and B.C.
bohdel over 13 years ago
It’s frustrating, because I believe that he’s using Cul de Sac for the fundraising that Rhymes with Orange also did. http://www.rhymeswithorange.com/2011/07/July-17-2011/

Thanks for your patience, all. Was indeed a loading error on our part. Though there were a few other theories about its absence as well… http://blogs.gocomics.com/2011/07/mysteriously-missing-lio-717-sunday-finally-surfaces.html#comments – Lucas Wetzel, Universal Uclick

Would have been a great strip without Cul-de-suck.

nice cross over. Boy, if her brother showed up he’d be in therapy for decades. Not just a wasp on a straw this time.

Mark is nice enough to do this for http://teamculdesac.blogspot.com/ Check out Team Cul de Sac!

I never heard of ‘Cul-de-Sac’… & what strip is ‘Nothing New’ making fun of?
fenneuter over 13 years ago
I agree, “Nothing New” is a takeoff on “Dustin”, but Mark has screwed up by drawing the characters better than the originals – well, actually the dad looks kind of like Scary Gary…

Zing! Loved the self-referential humor on panel #2 from the last time the Jesoids got miffed here in the comments when you made reference to B.C.’s uber-religiosity at times. These sorts of strips are good in moderation; their rarity makes them all the more welcome when they do appear.
kingofhudson over 13 years ago
I love the parody of ‘Dustin,’ that comic is so terrible! It replaced ‘My Cage’ after they got canceled. They obviously tried to target the twenty something crowd and only ‘My Cage’ succeeded
