    Actually, the first time their father tried to abandon them in the forest, Hansel and Gretel dropped pebbles along the way and found their way back home. The second time their father abandoned them, he made sure they didn’t have any pebbles. Instead, they dropped bread crumbs. The animals in the forest ate the bread crumbs, so they were truly lost and eventually found the ginger bread house. The phrase “follow the bread crumbs” is inaccurate.
