At a convention some years ago, the organizers thought it would be fun to give out small superballs (abt. 1/5"). Within a day or so, the hotel made them stop and collect all the balls they could find. It seems folks would get a handful, go to the second or third floor of the open atrium and drop them. “Look out below!” Also, some brilliant doofus’ (doofuses? doofi?) decided to whip them down as hard as they could causing the balls to shatter. It was kinda dangerous for a while.
That city was supposedly observed by residents of the cities of Foshan and Jiangxi. At the time, the apparition was widely explained as a natural mirage, or optical illusion, called a Fata Morgana . That hypothesis came from a Texas A&M University atmospheric scientist.

I had some in the saddlebags of my motorcycle. One bag opened at 50MPH and the balls started bouncing down the road!! OMG!

Considering the biblical brew ha ha over the Tower of Babel, you’d think NASA would have punctured its way to Heaven by now.
