It reminds me of an SF short story about sacrificing virgin girls to a dragon, and one intended sacrifice met the dragon before the sacrifice was scheduled to happen. The dragon thought virgins were too skinny and unsatisfying. Imagine what happens next when she suggests that priests are fatter and probably better food. No, I don’t remember the book it was in. Sorry.

Made me think about the tribe of islanders that would travel to a neighboring island inhabited to dignified lions to gather recently hatched seaguls so they could offer them to the eternal porpoises that kept their island afloat. They were arrested for transporting young gulls across stately lions for immortal porpoises.
