Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for September 24, 2014
September 23, 2014
September 25, 2014
Transcript:
Gunther: "Hi, Luann!! Uh...uh...I...um"
Gunther: "Well, gotta go! Bye!"
Gunther: "Oops"
Luann: "Gunter's such a dweeb."
Tiffany: "Yeah, you two are a perfect match!"
Tiffany is looking a little scruffy in these strips. The point of her character was she was shallowly style-oriented with perfectly coiffed hair, and dressed in the height of fashion since her first appearance. But what would Mr. Upchurch know about girl’s fashion before he was born?Maybe he could reference earlier strips, and if nothing else, realize that Luann pretty much only wore jeans?
So what is bad about having a nerd for a partner? Many of the male ones are gentlemen. They don’t assume that girls are mere sex toys like many of the other guys do.
Personally, I like Jonathan Upchurch’s version of the cast as little kids better than I do Greg Evans’s originals as seen in “Luann Againn”. If Upchurch were to draw the cast as 18-year-olds, they would not doubt look different from Evans’s current renderings, but would that necessarily be a bad thing? After all, Evans has changed their looks often enough himself. Luann would probably look better with the tiny nose she has in this week’s “memory book” than she looks now, with the snout.
Gunther.Considering their rivalry, little Luann of course rejected him after Tiff insulted little Gunth.*But she could have done it differently— she could have said, “I DO like Gunther— I think he’s COOL.” Then Tiff might have turned jealous and vied for Gunther’s attention. (Or she might have continued to make fun of them.)
Luann in her waders with one blue sock and one white sock and Gunther with a bow tie and a pocket full of pens look like they would make the perfect preteen couple. Have a box of conversation hearts for Valentine’s Day, Luann, and a troll doll. ~When did Gunther and Luann grow a neck? ~Tiffany looks like Hayley Mills in that circa 1960 Life magazine cover. ~Tiffany, did you try to cut off the cowlick in the back of your head? I did that, too, but when younger than ten. ~Those sagging knee socks, Tiffany, were something every little girl had to put up with. They were hard to keep up after a few washings.
Gunther is so unaccustomed to having females pay him the time of day that he runs off to Peru with the first one who tries to get the least bit intimate, even though they are total opposites and she wants to change him.
According to Wikipedia, Rosa appeared much earlier than the 2011 beauty pageant. Wikipedia provides a link to a September 2006 comic as the first appearance of a Rosa who has a more Latino look than she does later on.
You state… “If he uses this exact same cartoony style for the older cast it will go over like a lead balloon.”++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Thank you for stating what I have been thinking but was not able to put into words! I happen to really like Greg’s very clean, almost modernesque drawing style of the last few years. The simplicity of the lines highlights the complexity of the drawing style. I think Greg’s style of drawing all of the characters in their modern ages has been wonderful and is fitting to the plot lines. If the grandson uses the cartoony approach while trying to have the more elaborate story lines…. well….. it will not be my cup of tea.
You state…. “A girl dated you that hated your personality and spent years complaining about you to others while she struggled to change you? And then stayed with you in spite of not changing you at all and not being happy with your personality?”++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++That UNFORTUNATELY does not seem all that unlikely. I can think of a small handful of couples I know who were very much like your quote. They were not comfortable with divorce, but neither were they comfortable with each other. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I was (am?) a bit like Gunther. I am glad that I did not find a wife who wanted to change who I am. I am very fortunate my wife accepts me for all my many faults… and my few, minor attributes.
I love the cartoons that are drawn this week. All the kids look cute! When did Gunth wear a bow tie? The only character that comes to mind with a bow tie is Porky Pig? Also, I wonder how Rosa looked like as a ten year old?
Gag! What memories! Poor Gunther—so many more years of dweebhood still ahead of him! Tiff and Luann hanging together is really not too unlikely at age ten, I think.
In a few hours, it will be sundown, and the beginning of a New Year for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. For everyone, good health and happiness. See you next year…
Personally, I don’t care for Mr. Upchurch ‘s version of the the Luann characters. They’re flat and without depth, or background, and of a “style” like many another web cartoon on the internet. Gunther ’s flop-sweat not withstanding, improvement is in order.

Well, the ‘Dweeb’ went on to get a much hotter girl then Luann anyway, though I’m sure some may disagree.

Gunther’s glasses are square, even when seen from the side. Nice touch to show just what a dweeb he was (is).
JayBluE about 10 years ago
And somewhere in between “diaper and hyper”, there’s a bit of “dapper”…. somewhere….
JayBluE about 10 years ago
Wonder if she paid for it by the Square inch?
JayBluE about 10 years ago
LOL! That was a loaded answer…..

Gunther’s grooming is a little scruffy. He needs a dab of Brill Cream.

I know we don’t see eye to eye on a lot, but seriously bravo for that comment.

Luann is Tiffany’s “rival” (sometimes). It is the people who post on this board who are Tiffany’s real “enemies” (non-stop).
TheLiam about 10 years ago
Because of the perceived slights our super special snowflake has taken from Tiffanty.

Who sends their kid to middle school in a bow tie? Got a death wish or something?
TheLiam about 10 years ago
And the Doctor said bow ties are cool

Mr. Upchurch’s drawings are fresh and cute and do not have the stiffness that Greg has a bit of a problem with.
JayBluE about 10 years ago
Again,I say that even if drawing style changes in a given strip, it could seem more of a challenge if dialogue/script ever does…
