Brad: What're you making now? TJ: A test batch of different mini quiches for you to sample, Mr. Groom. Brad: I'm sure you have the catering under control, TJ. but this remodel-will it be done in time for Toni to move in? TJ: With you helping? Absolutely! Brad: Hi, captain. What? a wildfire?
Templo S.U.D. about 8 years ago
the wildfire might be the perfect distraction for Brad and Toni so TJ can probably single-handedly do all the remolding
Namrepus about 8 years ago
By TJ saying “With you helping” he assured that Brad would not be able to help. It’s the “I’ll be right there” syndrome.

If real men don’t eat quiche, what does that say about eating mini-quiches? :-)
SF1972 about 8 years ago
So many potential cliffhangers here…and with the wedding in only 28 panels!
Airman about 8 years ago
This is a bad omen. I don’t like “routine” fire calls just before the scheduled wedding. Danger for Brad? For Toni?
Tyge about 8 years ago
There’s a wildfire coming all right. Probably AFTER the wedding.
water_moon about 8 years ago
Lots of wild fires in the Southeast right now. REAL ones, so say a prayer/keep in mind the real firefighters out there right now.

It’s a trap, the Captain is luring Brad to a stag.

Maybe the fire will spread and burn down their wedding hall; emergency reboot at the DeGroot’s new hall… hilarity ensues!

They should have the stag party at the fire station they already have the pole for the dancers
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
Brad, forced to chop down trees to make a fire break in the forest, accidentally cuts off his right leg, with a chainsaw, he then spends the next few weeks looking for a prosthetic leg, so he can make the wedding. Unfortunately, the only one in his size, is one of those old fashioned wooden “peg legs”; in a flash, TJ changes the wedding to a PIRATE theme, hilarity ensues!!
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
Brad is cut off from the rest of the fire crew, he finds himself surrounded by flames, it seems he is about the die; in the knick of time, he spots a large cave deep in the woods, it’s stone and fully fire proof, he ducks in, hoping there’s no bears inside, phew, safe. What he didn’t realise is that the cave DOES have an owner, a 60-something mountain woman, what “Aint seen a man, in nigh an’ Twenny year!” Will Toni find him in time, or will Brad already be taken? Hilarity ensues!!

The wedding is less than a month away. It’s way too late to be deciding the menu.

For the record: I love quiche. And I get those mini-ones from Trader Joe’s, which are perfect for breakfast or lunch.

I make those often too.

Now Just DARN Minute, Smiley! Wasn’t it Your “Bright Idea” to Remodel the House in the 1st Place? And Now, just because You suddenly feel the “need” to cook stuff that NOBODY in His/Her right mind is gonna Eat, You Need “Help?!?”
Brad? Elope. E-L-O-P-E. ELOPE! While You STILL Can….,

hate quiche. If you’re going to eat scrambled eggs, then eat them smooth and dense, not fluffy!

Obviously these guys don’t know anything about construction. The studs run from floor to ceiling, with the firebreaks in-between.

If an evacuations happen then the Fuse might temporarily serve as a shelter.

If how the fire begins becomes an arc we might find Brad using his skills for minutiae in learning how to become a fire investigator.
.
Should a band of squaters turn out to be the accidental cause, and Piro among them, then Bernice might discover an interest in the study of law.

A “WILDFIRE” near Pitts?!?! Oh, oh. Not a good sign. This reads like a lot of classic (tragic) literature where there will be in this case, one or both of our pre-nuptual couple being either a) at grave risk, b) hurt, maimed, or c) even worse.
.
Here is hoping for NO melodrama (raising coffee cup up to the monitor as if a toast)….. but I doubt it at this point. I shall simply sit back, and ruminate with my pipe while waiting further developments.

There is an old saying: Make a plan and the devil smiles." As a retired engineer, often on call, I can say: “Make a plan and the telephone rings.”

“it takes a very special type of bravery to chose to be a firefighter who fights them”
.
Not too special.
I’ve fought a few myself, put them out. Usually Forestry comes in with a caterpillar tractor with turning plow, plows out a fire lane. we can could easily put out whatever fires skipped the lane.
.
My nephew was in the West Virginia National Guard and went out west every sumer to fight them. He liked the fact that he could stop many of them with a leafe blower on his back, blow out fires on the edge, blow burning material back into the burned area where it would die out for lack of fuel.
.
Then they sent him off to Iraq and he decided o get out after his first tour of duty there. Didn’t mind anything but being away from his wife, Regina.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace about 8 years ago
Volunteer fire departments are infamous for getting to a structure fire after it is too late to save it. Someone once asked my brother-in-law, Bobby Chancery, if he had EVER saved a home from fire. He answered,
“Hundreds. I put out the woods fires before they got to the people’s homes”

NO MORE WEDDING FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!
ACTIVIST1234 about 8 years ago
Oh no! The bride or groom might get injured and be incapacitated for the wedding.
Airman about 8 years ago
This is an important fork in the narrative: do we go serious, or do we go for humor? I strongly suspect that this will be more serious than tasting quiche or debating music. This is like, “Cry havoc, and let loose the dogs of war”. Brad may be in the most dangerous battle of his life with this wildfire.

Why do I have this feeling of impending disaster?? And I have the feeling that the remolding might be the least of Brad and Toni’ worry.

Toni’s gonna die fighting the fire so that the deGroot status quo can continue.

Just in case anyone misses my first line above WE HAVE NOMOROBO ON OUR LANDLINE. Whether it works or not depends on if your own service blocks it, and that is true for either landlines or cell phones. For us it works on both.

There was supposed to be some tragic event this fall. Someone here with knowledge said that. Toni’s breakdown doesn’t qualify, so maybe some horrific event (that may affect the wedding) is forthcoming… the wildfire?.
Outsideplaying about 8 years ago
If Brad does get hurt fighting the wildfire, weddings have been known to be conducted in a hospital. Toni would definitely go for that. She was the one who wanted a small wedding anyway.

Greg told us to expect some bumps in the road to the wedding. But I didn’t expect anything so potentially serious as a wildfire!
I hope neither Brad nor Toni is injured fight it!
RSH about 8 years ago
yeah.. to Suki (I can’t seem to use the reply mode), I think the word was “trauma” not “tragic/tragedy”. i.e. some ‘traumatic’ event could yet happen.
