Our big male Dane, Baron was pretty lazy about it. He’d bark once. Wait about 10 seconds. Bark again. Then he’d look around to see if anyone was paying attention. If not he’d come and get us. Once we got back to where he started, he would just stand there and grumble.
His sister, on the other hand, was very vocal. I had to train her to bark on command. If she really really had to bark, she’d come and get me. I’d say “Tessa, Woof.” She’d bark and be happy.
My Great Dane Hudson will sometimes bark without even raising his head. Sending out a message like, hey I may be asleep but I still have one eye on you anyhow! He does go ballistic, however, when the neighbors roll out the garbage cans for pick-up. I never let him bark incessantly at anything, but he enjoys barking at the garbage cans so much that I let him.
We live on a creek and sound travels very well on water. We don’t always hear stuff but our dogs do – whether it is a duck, someone across the creek, or another dog half a mile away.
So fairly often it feels like they are barking at nothing, but chances are, there is something, but we can’t discern it.

It could be spirits he’s barking at.

My Gracie does that sometimes. I’m sure there is something there, but with my human limitations, I am unaware.

Did they name her Kinsey after the PI in Sue Grafton’s Alphabet Murder Mysteries?

He’s barking at the memory of the shadow of a leaf that he dreamed fell off a tree two weeks ago!
