So he’ll imagine he’s a housewife imagining she’s an admiral! That’s cheating but I couldn’t see Sedgwick having even the slightest idea (or interest) in what a housewife thinks, says or does! I wonder where his mother is anyway? (Not that she’d be a regular housewife either!)
Dear diary. It is August 6th 1945, here in Nagasaki. i got a letter from my son this morning telling me about how hard his unit has been fighting the Yankees. He seems worried that we might lose the war. I will go to the market shortly to buy fish for my lunch… I look out the window… What is that light, so bright it dims the sun… Ahuge cloud rises up and the earth shakes. I am afraid…
and I can see the big fat F he gets from failing to understand the assignment. The point isn’t to flex your knowledge of WW2, EVERYONE knows that, it’s the most famous war ever; and it isn’t about your knowledge of military strategy or trivia either, this assignment is about understanding another culture and empathizing with the perspective of someone living in trying times. Both things that a spoiled rich kid should REALLY be taught before he grows up to be his dad.
So, would that be a wife in Japan or a wife who has Japanese heritage in the United States? There was a very different perspective between the two during WW2.

I don’t know any stories about Japanese housewives but there are lots of movies about them. Easy to find on the internet.

I recommend all Setsuko Hara movies, especially “Late Spring” and Tokyo Story”. She was great.

Actually for HIM, surprisingly empathetic, and not stereotyping his protagonist as “just an obedient little woman”

Those Japanese wives were well-educated!

Well, at least Sedgwick gave it the Old Grammar School Try! His story is more fit for American TV than for academia, however….

If that were the top news story of the day, it doesn’t seem all that unlikely.
