Of course, this is completely undone if one’s withholdings are more than one’s tax liability for the year, because then you have “handed money to the government” for months and by waiting until the deadline to file your return you are only delaying getting it back from the government.

But you just keep thinking simplistically, Monty. You’re good at that. (I bet Pilsner knows more about income tax than you …)

I don’t mind paying taxes if the govt. spends wisely, but that is not the case, it’s easy to give someone’s elses hard earned money away. It’s kinda like free tuition, I’m sure most students will act responsibly, yea right.

A can of pop at the table with a straw? And a table cloth?

Oh, I gotta get outta the house more. Spring is here, maybe I’ll collect some deer ticks and get another dose of Lyme.

Taxes are a way of freeing you from the ornerous burden of building your own roads, schools and hospitals.

Civic obligations include shoveling the public sidewalk in front of your house in the winter and mowing the city-owned terrace in the summer, and most people are perfectly willing to do that without giving it a second thot. Why? Because we all do better when we all do better.

I have no problem with the concept of taxation, but the burden is that we-the-people have to figure out how much WE owe THEM. What other creditors do that? Not the utility bills, mortgages or rent, not car loans, not property taxes. The IRS has our reported data. Send me an itemized bill and be done with it.

That’s our Monty: living on the edge, whether it’s paying his taxes or driving his car. But NEVER over the edge!
