It’s like the episode of Night Court where Dan has to prosecute in doggie court, and the defense always wins by baby-talking to the judge, “Just look at this face! This is the face of a good boy!”
The “I couldn’t hold it” defense. Never fails in a criminal proceeding. Although I understand the puppy lost in a later civil action for damages. The plaintiff’s attorney argued that “If the puppy $#!+$, you must convicts!”
It’s been over a year since this strip ran my all-time favorite cartoon ever, of a man growing old with his dog, mourning its passing, and then finding love with a new puppy. I wish I’d bookmarked it. I still tear up just thinking about it.
This reminds me of a cartoon I once saw of a mother standing at her front door looking at her ruined garden while her very young son hands her some flowers saying, “I picked them for you Mommy.”

I had a half St. Bernard/half Tall-Dark -And-Sneaky-Stranger puppy, who for the first eight months of her life, thought her name was g#xx@%%$/ Blaze !
She survived puppy hood and was my companion for almost 15 years.
