Here’s the funny thing about Gilligan’s Island. I’m European. My country didn’t get Gilligan’s Island when it first aired. In fact, I don’t think it’s ever been shown here.
My point is, all I know about the show, I learned from pop culture references in other shows, comics and so on. That happens a lot here. Very few of us have ever seen a single episode of I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners. There’s so much American stuff we hear about on TV and in books, but never actually experience for ourselves…
The Gilligan’s Island theme, like many other songs and poems, uses common meter or ballad meter. That means that you can swap the tunes around between them.

I thought that the opening line of the MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW theme was “Who can turn the world down with a smile?” Which I think is better!
Another song I’ve misheard was ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down”:
Actual version:
You keep on talking about your crazy nights
One of these days you’re gonna get it right
Version I heard:
You keep on talking about your crazy life
One of these day’s you’re gonna get a knife!
