For the record… ""The Whiffenpoof Song," the [Yale Wiffenpoofer] group’s traditional closing number, was published in sheet music form in 1909. It became a hit for Rudy Vallee in 1927 and later in 1947 for Bing Crosby. It has also been recorded by Elvis Presley, Count Basie, Perry Como, the Statler Brothers, and countless others.
Mory’s refers to Mory’s Temple Bar and Louis to a former owner of Mory’s, Louis Linder. The chorus is derived from the poem “Gentlemen Rankers” by Rudyard Kipling, which was set to music by Guy H. Scull (Harvard 1898) and adapted with lyrics by Meade Minnigerode (Yale 1910) & George S. Pomeroy (Yale 1910).14 (Wikipedia)
To the tables down at Mory’s To the place where Louie dwells To the dear old Temple bar we love so well
Sing the Whiffenpoofs assembled With their glasses raised on high And the magic of their singing casts its spell
Yes, the magic of their singing of the songs we love so well “Shall I Wasting” and “Mavourneen” and the rest We will serenade our Louie while life and voice shall last Then we’ll pass and be forgotten with the rest
We’re poor little lambs who have lost our way Baa, baa, baa We’re little black sheep who have gone astray Baa, baa, baa
Gentleman songsters off on a spree Doomed from here to eternity Lord have mercy on such as we Baa, baa, baa
The Yale Whiffenpoofs, an undergraduate musical group at Yale University, is the oldest collegiate a cappella group in the United States
“West Wing” fans will remember that the Wiffenpoofers sang on the “Silent Night” episode early in the series (one of the best episodes of one of the best series.)
And, yes, “House of the Rising Sun,” “Amazing Grace,” and the theme song to “Gilligan’s Island” have the same meter, and can all have their music/lyrics interchanged.
There was a tv show called The Black Sheep that opened with the lyrics “We are poor little lambs who have lost our way, baa baa baa” I think it aired in the 60’s.

So does Mozart’s “Ah! Vous Dirai-Je, Maman”. You would think Verne would know that.

“We’re poor little lambs…” is the “Wippenpoof Song”, as featured on that Disney movie about the Lippenzaner stallions.
