It is our own fault P.A.C.s run our Country. We all got lazy and let them buy Congress. And we are so busy trying to give democracy to others that don’t want it we lost our own. Electing the same idiots over and over and over again.
and, in the state of michigan, votes don’t count in many towns and cities since they have an “emergency financial manager” appointed by autocratic governor. he’ll probably rename michigan to fox news presents the state of michigan.
Harley—give it a rest: 2002-2005 prosecution of voter fraud resulted in, out of 160 million votes cast, exactly 89 cases…most of them like the felon who was so confused about his rights that he presented his PRISON ID while trying to register. Give up the “in Chicago dead people vote” meme…
and even after the diebold voting machine expose’ virginia is still using them. a voting “monitor” got very incensed with me in 2008 when i asked if the machines we were voting on were the diebold credit-card ones that were declared unsecurable and not to be used, in other states. yup. they were, and Still Are. crazy.
Richard, to nitpick, Citizens’s United didn’t declare corporations to be people – corporate personhood has been around a lot longer than that – but it radically expanded the notion of money = speech.
In 2008 before CU, Obama raised >$700M. Of course that was responsible, the money went to your candidate. This year he plans to raise $1B!!
For years union corporations, trial lawyer corporations, Hollywood corporations gave money to the Democrats. Never a word of complaint. But now some money is going to the Republicans and civilized society is coming to an end.
When the federal courts were first established with life-time tenure, the idea was to put the judges above political pressure. We can see how well that worked with the Roberts court.
That’s a rotten old chestnut you’re dragging out there Harley. For one thing, ACORN never did anything to approach the absolute assault on democracy that we’re beginning to see from our new corporate “people”. For another, Breitbart now admits that the ACORN video was a hoax; of course, he blames it on Jame O’Keefe, because he’s really such an innocent piece of crap. ACORN was working to register poor people and poor people vote Democratic and the “liberal press” went right along with it and hung ACORN out to dry even though it had no illegal impact on elections at all. I know they pay you drag out these lies, but, we know better and you are an ass!
The really bad thing about the 2000 election in Florida was that the Supreme Court decided that Bush won.If the count had been ended when the Republicans wanted them to, Gore would have won. If the count had been ended when the Democrats wanted, Bush would have won.As it is, Bush was appointed President by the Supreme Court of the US, which they have no Constitutional power to do.
You got it, junior ( Unlike you, I don’t turn and run, when I’m asked to back up a claim. )
In fact the staff in most of ACORN’s offices turned the pair away, reported the couple to the police, refused to provide them any aid, and in one case tried to convince the phony prostitute to get counseling. In no ACORN office did employees file any paperwork or do anything illegal on the duo’s behalf.
The title of the Saki story I couldn’t remember yesterday is “The Comments of Moung Ka.” Saki was the pen name of H.H. Munro, a British author of the early 20th Century. The story is even more relevant to today’s political events than I recalled; several of his stories are, now that I’m re-reading them. It seems to me that conditions about 100 years ago that we now see were on the cusp of big changes are very similar to now. You must be aware that good cartoonists and writers are often avid readers of history and the arts, and this gives a depth to their work. For those who think old people and ideas are irrelevant, read Saki’s story, “The Cobweb.”

And it is still the peoples’ fault that it happens. ‘We the People’ are the first words of our Constitution!

A few towns in Michigan have an “emergency financial manager” because they created the financial emergency and were not capable or refused to fix it.

I love Britain for getting an election over and done with in 2 weeks. Their governments are not noticeably worse than American ones, either.
