They appear to have the carnival all to themselves. Once Schulz decided not to draw background crowds and adults (perhaps after the four part golf tournament Sunday arc) the strip started to look a little lonely.
I saw a movie once where this girl and boy went to a carnival … they rode all the rides and ate popcorn and had a lot of fun … he even bought her a balloon … at the end of the day, the girl went for a double root-canal without anesthesia …
These kinds of strips drive me nuts. There he is, out on a perfectly nice date with a girl who is nuts about him AND enjoys a lot of the same things he does. But, what is he doing? Probably pining for that little red-haired girl that he can’t even TALK TO. I loved this strip as a kid (and still do) but dammit I read it as a How To Behave Guide to Girls. I “pedestaled” the girls I considered as cute and either couldn’t talk to them or was an idiot around them. Worse, I didn’t respond well to the girls who were obviously attracted to me. Probably not coincidentally, I began to feel romantic feelings for girls when I was 6 or 7. Argh.

The question in Panel 1 is like the following conversation:
“What do you want to do?”
“I dunno. What do you want to do?”
A sure sign the relationship is over.

Charlie is having fun but like most young boys around a young girl he is just confused.

You didn’t have to say all those things out loud, Chuck! Just keep all of your ideas for romantic dates inside your head!

That was a pretty expensive balloon

Now all he has to do is buy 98 more red balloons, and there’ll be a song about them.

Expensive balloon. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator states that 25 cents then now equals $1.54.

I’m pretty sure something like it happened before, but that’s one nice thing Chuck’s done for Patty.

At this point Charlie Brown usually answers the question with a question, like “I am?”

An important detail is missing here… how did the movie end? was it a horror movie, by chance?
