Actually, it’s likely of Semitic origin, unsurprisingly, when you think about Egypt.

As Calvin in his Stupendous Man costume saying the acronym of S.T.U.D.E.N.D.O.U.S, he said, “O for… wait, how do you spell this? Is it ‘I’?”

Can me peese have de definition?
vwdualnomand about 12 years ago
spelling bee contests are a big waste of intelligence. those really smart kids spend a lot of time learning how to spell words. their intelligence could be better applied to solving society’s ills like finding a cure for cancer, cold fusion, etc…

Speling no ees hard. All dose stoopid speling rules ees what ees hard.

Larry ees smartur den yoo think. The ‘language of origin’ for cat is very complicated. It seems many different peeples like usin’ variations of “kad”, “gat”, “katt” or “kit” to describe these common furry friends. So the word has spread over a hundred languages in many different families. (Although many East Asian languages seem to like using, as a name, the actual sound the cat makes: “meo”)But the origin of the word “cat” is (probably) either from the Nilo-Saharan Nubian, or the Afro-Asiatic Berber languages, near Nile Valley, where the kitty cat was first domesticated. Larry is justified in demanding origin.

Thank you. Keep the Crocs coming.

The ancient Greek word for “cat” is “αἴλουρος” (“ailouros”). “Cat” came into English from the Late Latin "cattus"¹ which came from the Berber “kedis”. ¹The classical Latin word for “cat” was “felis” whence “feline”. The later (and Modern) Greek word is “γατα” (“ga’ta”), also derived from Berber.

If there’s a nine-year old Vietnamese girl in this spelling bee, then Larry’s doomed…in fact, we all are. She’ll kick all of our tails!

I am not a linguist, but it is my understanding that spelling bees do not exist in languages other than English.

My trusty Amer. Herit. Dict. 4th Ed. just says “cat” is from a Germanic root. But since molecular genetics has shown that domestic cats derived from a North African feral species, I’m happy to go along with the idea of a Berber origin.

Remember they used to say that Terry Bradshaw couldn’t spell ‘cat’ if you spotted him the ‘c’ and the ‘a’.?
