I wouldn’t be so sure about that news reporters bit anymore.

But this is really more about Pastis’s job, and the jobs of hundreds of cartoonists.

The Internet hasn’t destroyed these things. Sure, it’s changed them. But only losers respond to change by looking for a handout. The others just put ads everywhere and laugh all the way to the bank.

99¢ a month gets you GoComics completely ad-free, except for their own banners about a new comic or ads for books by the cartoonists…. pretty unobtrusive stuff.

I love it… but it ain’t sending any cartoonist’s kids to college. They still get paid out of newspaper syndication fees…. Something will have to change when newspapers die.

At least it wasn’t Gene that showed up. His bass guitar is LITERALLY an axe.

I have antenna tv instead of cable/satellite. That means I get my commercials for free.

Switch – a generation ago it was the rock singers who got money for nothing and the chicks for free. What hath Schumpeter wrought?

@ Old TimerWell, that’s an opinion. There are fewer channels to flip through on the antenna stations. I had satellite about 15 years ago and most of the movies were rated at one-star and two-star. Most of the Canadian cable stations will at least provide a guide and most of the U.S. stations will not. These channels are in cahoots with one another to have their commercials coincide with each other.

Today’s Doonesbury strip covers this topic, too. It’s on GoComics.com

Congress has lately been listening to artists testify about this subject. I don’t know all the details, but I guess they are looking at legislation. That could account for the topic being common to Doonesbury. Here’s one:http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/rosanne-cash-to-testify-before-congress-20140624

Nobody should be paid except for government officials and educators, without whom the system of all for naught would not be possible. PbbbbbbbbbbTTTT!!!

I know way too many content producers who have ipads or kindles full of pirated books, ipods full of pirated music, and hard drives full of pirated movies and games. Meanwhile, they produce whatever that barely nets them $8-$10K/year, and fill the gap with foodshare benefits; pointing to their poverty as the reason they don’t pay for their content. Vicious circle of capitalism.

Isn’t it redundant to separately list fiction writers and news reporters?

The internet is free, however, you need a phone/computer/iPad/etc etc to access it. So… BLAME THE TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES!

The internet doesn’t just gets rid of jobs. It also makes more, and in some cases just replaces things. No cable TV, but streaming services make money. No selling CD’s, but you can still make money on digital music and merchandising.
