Nice of Marigold to want to respect water balloons’ wishes after blatantly insulting them. Though I guess that was before learning they might be capable of speech.
When my daughter was about 6-7 (she’s 37 now), she saw her grandmother lying in her recliner with her eyes shut. She ask gma if she was going to take a nap. Gma said no, she was just checking her eyelids for leaks. My daughter told me, years later, she had grown up terrified that her eyelids would become so thin they would tear. We had no idea she would take that so literal. We discovered 25 years later that my daughter is on the autism spectrum and she had taken/takes almost everything literally. Even now, when she is aware she does this, I have to be careful how I word things so I don’t cause her undue anxiety. But now she can also ask me to clarify.

Balloons can be filled with whatever they choose. Even Jello, if they’re weird enough to want that.

What’s the name of the balloon that gets thrown out (at) first?

Marigold’s logic reminds me of the claim that being drunk is horrible and, if you don’t believe that, just ask a glass of water.

Marigold! You can’t say that to a water baloon!

Phoebe brought an odd number of balloons. It wouldn’t be a fair one-on-one fight.

I love the English language. It does more to prevent comprehension of the spoken word than anything else I can think of.
