It’s not that tough, really. You “lie” down, or you “lay” something down. Just like you “sit” in a chair, but you “set” something on a table. You should no more be able to confuse the two words than “sleep” and “slip”. The real problem is that the past tense of “lie” is “lay”. Whoever dreamed up that part was a troublemaker.
You go, Opal, never give up on your duty to teach the next generation properly the meanings of the words we use to communicate.DON’T LIE DOWN ON YOUR JOBLAY IT ON HIM
Now if someone can please clarify when to use “good” and “well” the English lesson will be complete. I think correcting a young person’s grammar is a good thing. You are going them a favor, if done properly. Happy comic reading everyone!
Us all need to forget about any English rules of grammar, spellin and punkuation. It’s well enough for you and I and all of we to lie down our own rules .
@Cminuscomics&stories … that’s because the general consensus in this post is that we shouldn’t correct other people because it’s rude and it might hurt their feelings. I guess they would rather continue to be ignorant.
The problem lies, ahem, in that languages are not logical. They are the product of thousands of years of many people speaking them. I used to argue that German should be spoken logically but then it occurred to me that I could speak it thusly but the Germans would deem me an idiot. Learning a language is an attempt to communicate and if people don’t know what you’re saying, the whole exercise is moot.
It finally came to me why I paid “here, here” versus “hear, hear” no mind.It is a foreign expression around here.We say, “Right on, Dude.”“Amen, brother.”“Preach it, sister.”“Preach on.”“You go, girl.”“Word.”“Truth.”“You said it.”“Yea, verily.”You know, NORMAL expressions.
A friend was at my house one day and told my dog to “lay down.” She didn’t. I told her, “He told you to lie down.” She did, and my friend cracked up saying the dog’s grammar was better than his!

Lie is what you do. Lay is what you do to something else. Or someone does to you – if you get lucky.

An English teacher should be shot every hour until educators replace those two word-groups with 2 different words that will not be confusing anymore.
