Believe me, Earl, the only truism about aging is that you only get more like yourself as you get older. . .of which truism you and Opal are both exceptional examples!
That explains the smell! And no, there’s no neglect here of any laundry. If someone can clue me into a product that gets that STENCH out of clothes, I’d appreciate it. Most frustrating thing is that apparently men can’t even smell it!
It’s often more the spirit, not so much the letter, of aging. The outcome of the ‘sniff test’ depends on the sensitivity, and sensibility of ‘the sniffer’.
Why it is assumed, especially after both are retired, that women will do all the work? Is this why women live generally 7 years longer than men? Housework is good exercise. I never felt housework was my job just due to who I was. It got shared or it didn’t get done.
My young brother used to do the laundry for himself and his wife… and he used to grump about her putting her things in inside out… and when he folded them he had to turn them right-side out first… I told him to just fold her stuff the way she put it in the laundry, and if she wanted to wear it right side out, she could turn it herself!

I think you just become more as you get older. If you’re a chill sort of person, you get more mellow. If you’re a grumpy one, you become curmudgeonly.

We do get stinkier anyway.

In this strip, it seems that it’s been the older woman who’s been grumpier…

Earl and Opal’s last name should be ‘Carp’, not ‘Pickles’.

My experience is that men’s grumbling turns to inaudible mumbling.

I am finding I have to be more specific with my hubby as not a mind reader. 40 years of marriage.
