Just don’t donate used hay from a race track or a dairy farm — although that might add an air of realism to the scene.

Shredded paper works if you don’t have straw and is also bio-degradable.
We loaned out sheep to a nativity scene a few times.

Used to love the ‘barn smell’ after my Great Grandfather would bring the hay into the barn’s hayloft…
