Now that I think about it, what is the official Irish drinking age? Minor donors (and alcohol-abstaining adult donors) sure sure get fruit juice.

I started having a Guiness after giving blood in the 1980s. I was living in Scotland at the time and a mate told me about it. Best excuse for a pint ever.

Dear artist. You DO know Guinness is black, right? It’s called “ The Black Stuff” for that reason.

I was stationed in Scotland and one of the guys got a heart attack and was taken to the the local hospital. They would give him a pint of Guiness a day. Civilized medicine.

Sure beats OJ and wimpy cookies one usually gets here. Wonder what replaced the stout?

Giving alcohol, even one with a high iron content, after a blood donation isn’t a good idea. Alcohol is a diuretic. After a blood donation you want to increase hydration in order to increase blood volume. That alone is reason enough to stop doing it! Alcohol after donating blood also increases the likelihood of impaired driving.

I looked up why they stopped doing this and the reason, surprisingly, isn’t medical. (To be fair, research shows that Guinness does have some healthy aspects to it). Ireland dropped its legal limit for Blood Alcohol Content to 0.05%. The company that produces Guinness didn’t want to be associated with drunk driving, thus they ended the practice ahead of the change in the law. So it wasn’t the government to stopped the tradition, not directly anyway.

Seems like a fair exchange: A pint for a pint.

Wouldn’t it be better to give the Guinness first, that way both the donor and the recipient would benefit.

I was in the USAF stationed in England from 1956 to 1959. Blood drives were held on base and we were given an English pint (20 oz.) of beer for donating. There was never any shortage of Airmen willing to donate a pint for a pint. Don’t know if the blood taken was 16 or 20 ozs.
