How many people got sick or died after eating cake blown on by birthday celebrant? In the millions? I doubt it, unless the person is hacking and barfing. I doubt few
So I guess my ex could’ve used that phobia excuse, but instead opted to just do her nails, chew gum, and watch General Hospital.
Take care, may revered centenarian Yamichi “They Say I’m A Hundred Years Old I Lost Count At Around Seventy Or Seventy-Five Or Whenever It Was My Slippers Kept Walking To The Other Side Of The Room” Watanabord be with you, and gesundheit.
Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, “surely I can’t look that old.”.Well . . . you’ll love this story from a lady called Claire.
“My name is Claire..I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist.
I noticed his degree on the wall, which bore his full name.
Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name who had been in my high school some 25-odd years ago.
Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?
Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.
This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.
After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the same school as mine.
Even though she’s been teaching English for many years, my mother never felt her age was an issue, until the day she helped a student write a report on the Vietnam War. Mom recognised the name of a war correspondent mentioned in the textbook and blurted, “I used to date him!”
Peering up from his work, another wide-eyed student asked, “You dated someone from our history book?”
I wanted some context on how significant the over 100 age is as a demographic so I looked up the current population of Japan, and was surprised to find out it’s 126 million, that’s over a third of the population of the United States. That’s pretty interesting considering Japan is only about the size of California, pretty high population density…
I think that all of you commenters have missed the meaning of the word. All of your examples are of a word with more than one meaning. The example I gave above (cleave) shows that the meanings of the word are opposite of each other. There are other examples, but it’s late and I’m too tired to think of them right now.
The idea of blowing on a cake, and how it still an accepted practice, confounds me! I took a page from my grandfather — he always clapped his hands together forcefully to put them out. The germaphobe in me like this much better.

Then stop celebrating birthdays when you get to a certain age and your immune system is kaput, or let the rest of the birthday attendants get sick.

“Yes. yes, I did”he said, gleaming with pride.
“When did you graduate?” I asked.
He answered, “In 1987.Why do you ask?”
“You were in my class!!!!”, I happily exclaimed.
He looked at me closely.
Then,that
ugly,
old,bald,
wrinkled faced,
gray-haired,
decrepit,
idiot,
asked,
“What subject did you teach?"

The Age Factor

Until next time.
