Meemaw: ...And Jenny, the girl you used to tutor in English literature, just had her first novel published! And she said she owes it all to you, Rose! Isnt' that sweet? Rose? Rose? Meemaw (on the phone): Did I just trigger your "What am I doing with my life?" face? Rose: Uh...uh...

As a retired teacher I understand Rose’s reaction; I have those thoughts also.

Rose, she owes it all to you. You have immense value in what you do.

Just because you have helped someone to accomplish something in his or her life, does not mean that you have failed in your own. It is often that we provide the colors for other peoples masterpiece. Stand back and enjoy the big picture.

Rose, if it wasn’t for you, that novel may never have been written. It doesn’t need to have your name on it. Our lives are like ripples on a pond – be content with your contribution. And be happy that you were actually able to find out that something you did helped someone in a positive way. A lot of us never have that revealed to us.

Apparently, if Rose did something with her life it would be a novel experience.

Some of will never know the huge impact we had. You just have to do the best you can.

Rose HAS done something with her life. She’s raising a wonderful kid, has the love of a good man, and is happy in what she does. There’s an old saying “being happy is better than being rich” and the two don’t always go together.

My sister in law had this issue when the girl scout troop she worked with hit high school. Regardless of the positive impact she has as a mother and volunteer, she pulled out the high school yardstick of popularity and ‘success’ to measure herself and found herself lacking. Sad.

What a lovely bunch of uplifting comments today! I see we have quite a few philosophers among us!

That is the highest compliment a teacher can receive. Although I spent only 13 years teaching I had a couple of students come back years later and tell me one of the subjects I taught was the most valuable they ever had. I’ve been walking on air ever since – and that was over two decades ago!

One of the best compliments is that something you did or say or write helped someone else better their life because of it. I gave a suggestion to a girl at a sandwich shop who wanted to be a chef, but she couldn’t afford the tuition … talked to her several weeks later that she checked with a local casino restaurant and they were going to pay all of her training and hire her while she trained.

I have often wondered what Rose did before marrying. There was an old Sunday strip, with Rose in the attic going through her mementos, and we saw her at various stages in life. One showed her in “office attire” striding along with a briefcase in her hand.
