Rose: My love for gardening started with you, mom! Meemaw: I tried to make it fun for you! Rose: My friends wouldn't dream of crawling around in the dirt for a few green beans! Meemaw: I always told you that a garden is the one place where it's okay to play with your food! Rose: Thank you!

Veg gardening is a skill more of us need to develop. Not so much because of the âend of the worldâ scenarios that I keep hearing here in Florida, but just because itâs a lot healthier to know where your food comes fromâŠ

When I had a garden it was the only place I was truly happy. So busy now I had to sacrifice that joy.

Rose never had to get out in 95-degree heat and pick several 50-foot-long rows of green beans (or peas or corn). Sheâd feel a bit differently about what âfunâ gardening is if she had.

we had fields of tomatoes back-in-the-day and it was fun picking some of them for the roadside stand and selling to the local grocery. pants got green from the vines and the smell was everywhere⊠grampâs garden was much more diverse, but it wasnât a cash crop like dadâs

I have a garden but only have tomatoes and cucumbers. I do them in huge pots so watering is a lot easier. We donât eat enough green beans and squash to make it worthwhile to plant any. I get those from the local farmers. Same with corn.

When I look at plants they pick up their roots and run away screaming in terror. I leave the gardening to my husband.
