It happens. After several fruitless days in my deer stand, I was chewing on a large, crisp apple, and pondering if the sound & smell might draw in a deer. Just then I looked up to see a buck staring at me. But don’t fret; by the time I shouldered my rifle all I saw in the scope was a glimpse of white bounding into the bush.
Some animals are amazingly aware of which human or humans that could hold a soft spot and share their food/s with them especially birds..
Years ago when I lived in Los Angeles I had a friend come out for a short visit from Houston. She wanted to see the art galleries in Santa Monica so we left early one day. On our way there we decided to stop at a Burger King I’ve never been to before located in pretty setting with tall trees around it.Brought up a suggestion thinking it would be fun to share some of our fries with the birds there out doors but she promptly expressed her strong distain for birds in general. Ok, then we won’t bother since she was the guest.
While we both decided to eat our lunch outside in the car rather than go inside since it was a nice day out, After we got our order through the drive through I parked the car and we both rolled the windows down since it was warming up outside. She left to excuse herself for a few minutes to go inside to the restroom.
Honest to God, the moment she closed the restaurant door behind her, at least 10 birds of all different sorts just rained down from the sky as if the trees or sky opened up dropped them all at once out of no where right on and around my car. One sparrow even landed on the rear view mirror my driver’s side only inches away from my arm eyeing up the French fry still posed in my hand. Expecting the bird to fly away I moved my hand with the fry right up to it’s face and said plainly, “You want this”? To my surprise and delight it proceeded to nibble on the fry right out of my hand. Other birds were hopping all around close by hoping for some scraps/crumbs as well so of course I ended up giving them the rest of my fries.
Eventually I saw my friend returning and as soon as that restaurant door opened every bird disappeared so quickly I thought they all had vaporized some how leaving no trace of where they went. Told her what had happened and she replied, “They know I hate em”. I only laughed.
On occasions like this, I offer any veggies of fruit I was saving for dessert. The wildlife around the Gumbo estate are well behaved, but I still wouldn’t hand feed ’em.
