…but, as someone who has done a bit of search and rescue in his youth, I can tell you that unless you make a special effort to be seen, it is very likely the searchers will never find you in the woods. It can be incredibly difficult to find an individual on the ground (I did air search mostly), but many times more difficult with a lot of trees in the way.
especially if you’re going out by yourself…
- Tell someone where you expect to be and when you expect to be back
- Carry a good knife, a whistle and a signal mirror as part of your gear.
- Carry a fully charged phone (though don’t count on it working in the back country)
- Consider getting a Ham license and carry a radio (same caveat, but it does increase the odds )
- Carry some food and water and go prepared for ALL POSSIBLE weather in the area
And add to my list as you see fit, but that would be a bare minimum for heading into the woods or any other type of back country, especially alone. And don’t expect anyone to find you if you dress in camo gear for your outing… you gotta make yourself obvious for searchers to find you (and you shouldn’t need to ask me how I know).

The definition of a good pun is a) it makes you groan and b) you can’t wait to pass it on.
