What if the fair maiden turns into a self-centered nag and a shrew, always focused on what others have and never satisfaied with the good things in her life?
Sorry Val, this is escapism, not realism. Sometimes fantasyland is a good place to be. I still go there quite often in my ripe old age. In fact, it’s helped me get to my ripe old age.
I wish these old Sunday strips were colorized. It’s a very technical explanation, but I think I remember reading that back then, colorization was done by the publication. That’s because of different color printing processes. I’m old and forgetful, so I could be wrong.
Maybe it was the choice of Snow White, Cinderella, or Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) to marry the “Handsome Prince”, or “Prince Charming” (or maybe even his brother, Prince Wonderful Personality). But considering the choices that a woman had then, she would be wise to do that, as the Princes probably all had money and offered her more security than if she went an alternative route and married Gurth the Swineherd or a traveling minstrel. If she elected to stay single and become independent and even somewhat wealthy, she would be seen as an oddity or even crazy, and maybe even suspected (or worse) of being a witch!
When husband and I got married I started using “maiden + husband’s” last name – no hyphen. At the time I worked for my dad and he liked the idea of my having a different last name so we would sound like a bigger accounting practice. At the same husband and I started a small (ie, never made a profit) hand crafted business so he liked me to use my maiden name for the same reason.
Thirty-five years later (more like about 10 years ago actually) I think it was a mistake to use the double surname. The name does not fit on many forms. Some things have the double surname, some have married surname, and some have birth surname and this can cause problems as apparently Jane Maiden-Husbandname is not always picked up as the same person as Jane Husbandname and nor is Jane Maidenname.
One thing which concerns me is that I am Jewish by birth and my maiden name reflects same. Right now I would feel much safer using husband’s name – and anglicized version of his family’s Italian name – changed when his grandfather came through Ellis Island.
I would transfer everything over to Jane Husbandname, but it is just too much work for me for me to deal with -especially with having to deal with DMV and passport.
