That’s why I never use the pull tab. A can opener works just fine, especially the ones that cut the rim from the side, leaving no sharp edges on lid or can.
There’s a gadget which can be used to open cans slowly – instead of suddenly (which sprays you with the contents). I got it because I was having trouble opening the pulltab cans at all. Works great.

What’s really bad is the pineapple cans with the pull tabs that don’t pull all the way off. Then you risk cutting yourself.
