One year after visiting relatives for Thanksgiving we decided to return home on Saturday when the road would be less traveled. It turned out to be a Born Loser adventure since we were caught in a snow storm on the entire way home. The three lane highway had about 3" on snow and was reduced to a two lane trail blazed by the 18 Wheelers in our convoy. Fortunately everyone was being very cautious, maintaining extra distance between vehicles. With the slower travel and extra stops so I could relieve the cramping in my left leg (not a fun time to be driving a stick) our normal 4 and a half hour trip turned into a 10 hour snow trek.
Won’t be happening this year. We are neither extending nor accepting invitations to gather for Thanksgiving.
Had they taken the “road less traveled”, other people would have had the same idea and it would no longer be the road less traveled. It’s just like the supermarket checkout lines. When you switch to a less crowded line, you wind up behind someone who takes forever to checkout and then your former line starts to move very quickly.
These days I run across more stalled internet traffic (Go Comics is experiencing heavy volume right now, please try again later.) than I do stuck in the car traffic.
Coming back from visiting a certain relative almost all the way via Interstate highway on Sunday afternoons, I use the country side roads instead. I have learned there’s a good chance there will be some accident or traffic stoppage (not even an accident, just stupid driving) that will turn a three hour drive into four or more hours of frustration.
“The woods are lovely dark and deep but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.” Be careful about the road less travelled. Also Robert Frost…..
Gotta say I’m with Gladys on this one. I’d rather go 10 miles out of my was on a quiet country road then sit in traffic with a bunch of other disgruntled drivers doing anything to get an extra car length in front of you!
I don’t know about other states, but in Wisconsin we have “Rustic Roads.” They are mainly less travelled, scenic county roads all over the state. There is even a guide at:

There’s always a reason for a road to be less traveled, and often it saves you no time.

Also, “gone” before you left!
Every single “shortcut” or “bypass” I had learned in Central NJ by 1976 was jam-packed by 1985. It’s now 2020. Where the hell is my jet-pack?

You should have shopped online, but I doubt Brutus could turn the computer on and would talk into the mouse like Scotty in Star Trek 4.
