Know the feeling. You think a dinner party at which people spoke Canadian French, try being stuck in a traffic jam in the heart of Quebec City. My middle school and high school Paris, France, French was not at all helpful. All I could do was smile and shrug my shoulders. My husband has not let me forget it.
HAHAHA! Same here, Lennie. In fact, I am on vacation here in Montreal for the holidays and while they are bilingual in the hotel, there are plenty of people who speak very little English around here. At least menus are in both English and French. Works for me. LOL.
I also learned Parisian French in high school – and we were 30 minutes away from the Quebec border. I did manage to order food for everyone in the band in a restaurant where not one of the staff spoke any English. I figured that was good enough.

My ex wife never learned Spanish because her parents told her not to take it
They didn’t want her to know what they were saying when they spoke it with each other

You can live in the North and travel to the Deep South and not have a clue what some people are saying.

They’re saying how funny your comic is and therefore you’re funny too.

It wouldn’t have done you any good anyway. They teach Parisian French in US schools. Quebecois may as well be Zulu.

Panel 1: This is Lennie. He draws a comic strip and thinks he is funny.
Panel 2: His cat is the funniest part of the strip, and he doesn’t know it.
Panel 3: Lennie also plays trombone.
