I had a coworker once who brought in a container of left-over casserole. She had laced it with a laxative and placed it, unlabeled, in the breakroom fridge. Sure enough, it got stolen. She never found out who took it, but she was sure that person never stole food again!
I had someone stealing my lunch for a few days. It was usually a ham sandwich and chips. Found out who the culprit was one day when I brought a PB&J and he had a bad peanut allergy and ended up in the ER. He quit stealing lunches after that.
At least it’s only food. I once worked in a place where I had things stolen from my desk, such as drafting tools and a calculator (when calculators were expensive items). Management just shrugged and said “just take the stuff home with you every night”, as if lugging around a big tote will all that stuff in it every single day was a perfectly normal thing to do.
While I’ve never really understood why people steal like that and it ain’t something I would consider doing but I certainly have come to expect it… the worst I experienced was while working for an Air Force Intel wing… every one working there had a TS-SCI clearance. So you could reasonably suppose that everyone there was the most reliable and trustworthy you could find in a human being.
No such luck, we still had folks who stole from the coffee fund, both cash and food (we stocked snacks to go with the coffee). When the most trusted steal like that, what can you expect from the average joe (or josephine) that you work with.
Food theft is not a problem at my workplace. However, it is also explicitly clear that unlabeled items are fair game as we often have vendors bring it food. We do have a few people that will hog said vendor food if given a chance.

You CAN expect the people around you to be honest and decent, and you can also expect to be disappointed on occasion

Anything left in the fridge overnight should be thrown out by the cleaning staff.

I bought a dorm fridge and put it in my office: no more disappearing food!
