I’ve heard people argue that slaves were better off than non-enslaved poor people of the time. Slaves were fed and housed … after a fashion.
But then, you never hear of people volunteering to be slaves, do you? Nobody ever knocked on a plantation house door to apply for a job as a slave. Not that I know of, anyway.
