As I understand it, the story is slightly more complex, and has a deeper lesson that the corporate media (even those who are reporting it) don’t want us to think abou too much:
The Exxon researchers concluded that climate change was real and caused by fossil fuel use. It was assumed there would be government regulation to get us off oil (especially given that this was shortly after the Arab embargo of the early 70s). Therefore, they recommended the company make plans to exit the fossil-fuel industry in favor of alternative energy and fuel sources.
Then the Baby Boomers, in our first (but not last) act of irrationality, helped put grandfather-figure Ronald Reagan into the White House, along with is near-religious belief that “government is the problem, not the solution.” In the simplistic Reagan universe, all regulation is evil and should be eliminated. Exxon quickly got the message, and so shifted its strategies from exiting the fossil-fuel industry to maintaining the Reaganauts in DC. See how well it’s worked?
This, therefore, is the lesson of the story that the corporate-run media don’t want us to think about:
There was a time in this country’s history when the government regulated things for the public good: keeping the air and water clean, keeping crazy people (we hadn’t yet invented terrorists) from having machine guns, etc.—and the people generally supported it, and it generally worked. Millennials, I realize this might be new information (I’m pretty sure it’s been excised from the history textbooks in Texas, and therefore the rest of the country as well), but it did happen. And in many ways the country was a better place back then.

what makes you think the supposed global warming is bleaching coral? If there is global warming [which is called Global Climate Change now] man had nothing to do with it and man can surely do nothing to reverse it. OH yea, we can influence solar output – sure, we can check global warming.

Of the 0.8 degrees C increase over thepast century, only .26 degree C is attributable to man. Also, glaciers lose more water through evaporation than melting. The South pole is a virtual frost-free refrigerator as the humidity is practically 0.How many of you are aware the plastics industry is dumping the spent sulfuric acid from the plastics making process into the all the oceans of the earth, killing the plankton that feeds ocean life ? Shouldn’t we take a look at all the monied interests ?

.I have seen first hand the damage that man has wrought on the fragile ecosystem of the coral reefs.
It would take too long to list the ongoing destruction, so suffice it to say, almost the world’s oceans are in dire straights, due to man’s ignorance and greed ! Global Warming, Chemical Dumping, Over-Fishing, Pollution etc.etc.etc. are killing our oceans and their inhabitants ( coral, btw is a living thing ).
This is not something that we can deny or ignore and it will go away.
It’s real folks, like it or not and it is gradually impacting our entire lives.
Maybe the naysayers can get away with pretending it doesn’t matter in their own lifetimes but I can almost guarantee that their grandchildren will curse them for their selfishness and stupidity !

World production of H2SO4 200million TonnesWorld production of CO2 30,000million TonnesDissolved CO2 is by far the largest contributor to ocean acidification. The major effect is on bone growth in fish and shell growth in molluscs.
Mass balance of ice sheets in both the Arctic and Antarctic is declining. A good part of Antarctica is below sea level and the floating ice shelves at the boundaries are melting from underneath. When the melting reaches the grounding points of the ice shelves, the ice cap held behind them will follow the pattern seen in Greenland and the collapse of the Antarctic ice cap to a smaller stable state will start in earnest. We really don’t want to get to that point because there will be no turning back
