The Mermaid’s “Legend of the Nuclear Objects” grows:
“Every year, at the summer solstice, these mysterious objects float down to us from the surface. Every year they get bigger in size. They seem to be some sort of clothing, but worn by who, or on what, we have no idea. Perhaps they have some sort of ceremonial significance, an offering of some sort? We consider them to have ritual use. Or, possibly, just more trash thrown into our domain!”

Love the seagull with the scuba helmet

Obviously, the long stringy things are feelers. Shoes are just the cast off skins of catfish.

Gotta love the aqua-gull.

MerDad and MerMom!
From the wonderfully odd and oddly wonderful imagination of Mr. WH.
Love this.
[I wish telegrams were still a thing.]
The great poet ( and Jesuit priest ) Gerard Manley Hopkins would be in sympathy with Wallace’s critique of
shoes. Hopkins referenced them as one more artificial barrier ( shackles, as Wallace called them )
preventing humans from direct contact with Nature. As in, “nor can foot feel being shod.”

It doesn’t appear that they are in league with the deep ones, that’s encouraging.

Amelia is right.

Even if mermaids spy-hopped like whales, they would only see people on the beach (without shoes) anyway..!

I can’t stop chuckling over the seagull in panel 2.

How would mermaid have electrical devices underwater? Last time I looked, water and electricity don’t work well together.

Ariel had a hard time remembering the word “feet” and she studied humans.

Well, I dunno, they’re clearly friends with a deep-diving seagull, and they at least have feet, so…

If they’re Nikes, then you’re casting off the shackles of underpaid Asian workers

Amelia has the right idea. Chuck those Chucks into the ocean before your mom shows up.

Mermaids are not totally ignorant of the land, otherwise why would there even be stories of mermaids who longed to live amongst those with legs?
Thinkingblade about 3 years ago
I do like that the seagull apparently lives in all worlds with his own air unit to mingle amongst the merfolk.
