Is this a superstition that actual people have, or is it a Spud thing?

Presumably this means that Wallace and Spud will have to swim across that stretch of water (seagull will fly across) and then walk around the other side of the lighthouse.

And with them cut off on all three sides, the game is afoot!

I’ve really no idea. This is a new one to me & I’m a New Englander?

Standing may be bad luck, but what about running or hopping across it? I’m not seeing many options..

Even Will Henry’s signature is avoiding the shadow

Shadows appear when some object blocks light. Once the sun sets, fainter shadows can be seen where moonlight is blocked. Fainter still are shadows created by blocked starlight. So, if Spud and Wallace wait for the sun to set, the lesser shadows will fall differently, which should allow… um, wait… wait…

What was the question again?

I sense a new storyline.

Good to know.

Some comments here seem to forget that the sun moves (or, you know, appears to move) and so, therefore, do shadows (or rather, are repeatedly recreated). The question is, will the shadow move across the spur of land where the boys are or away from it?

Good thing Spud is always prepared for the worst.

Looks like a quandary to me as they are out on a point with no non shadow way out. Good luck my friends…..

Bit of a loophole in that legend.. run.

Only true if you are standing on the deck of a boat at the time. Likely to be rocks in that shadow.

Does it count if you’re walking though?

Someone tried to tell me that it was bad luck to ride your bike over train tracks with your feet touching the bike pedals. The only thing that I wasn’t touching going over the tracks was my bike seat. Mean person.

An actual Thing or not, it sounds ominous. Forbid you should step on a crack in the sidewalk that is in the shadow of the light house.

Bad luck isn’t the worst thing that could happen. Missing supper, making Mom mad …

I feel like the only solution here is for Amelia to throw them a flashlight. They could use it to light a path thru the shadow, thus never stepping on the shadow. Now they need to start hollering and hope she hears them.

What about if you run through it? Or sit it out? Is that bad luck too? Is the amount of bad luck related to how long you are in the shadow?
